Muncie South continue their winning ways in 2010 as they finished with a solid 8-3 record, their fourth straight winning season under veteran Head Coach Mike Paul. After opening the season with a loss, the Rebels won seven of their next eight regular season games, losing only to crosstown rival Delta along the way. After a convincing win in the sectional opener over Marion, the Rebels once again fell to Delta in the sectional semifinals, dropping a 28-6 decision to the Eagles. With one of the state’s top rushers back for his junior season, 2011 could very well be a special season for Muncie South.
Junior tailback Mckenzee Nash (5-10, 165) put up some big numbers as a sophomore last year. He rushed the ball 183 times for 1,412 yards, and also averaged nearly 11.5 yards per pass reception as well. He can’t do it alone though, he’ll get some help from junior QB Timber Hatfield (6-2, 195) who will step into the starter’s role this season. He’ll have some experienced receivers to throw to in addition to Nash with senior Myron Anthony and junior Tim Barrett back as starters. Sophomore Josh Strauch should also contribute from a slot position for the Rebels as well. Two starters return on the offensive line, led by three-year junior starting center Jacob Strauch (6-1, 220). Junior Aundre Diamond also returns as a starting tackle for Muncie South this season.
Seven starters are back on defense for the Rebels, including both Diamond and Jacob Strauch at the two defensive end positions. Senior linebackers Nick Hollowell and Devonte Monroe both return at the linebacker spots for the Rebels. Their strength on defense should be in the secondary where everyone is back from a year ago, and has played together as a foursome the past two seasons. Senior Darin Banford, along with Nash, Barrett, and junior Jake Reed should be solid in the defensive backfield for Muncie South this year.
It could be quite a lot of fun watching this Muncie South football team this season, and they’ll get to showcase their team at Lucas Oil Stadium in week two against rival Muncie Central this year. Coach Paul says this year’s Muncie South team “has the fastest and most athletic group of skilled offensive players they’ve ever had (34 years, by the way). If the offensive line develops as a unit, we have a chance to be extremely explosive, and win quite a few games this season.”
