Preview of the 2010 season

In 2009, Warren Central claimed the school’s seventh state crown. Also, third year head coach John Hart joined legends Dick Dullaghan and Mo Moriarity to earn state titles at two different schools.
The slogan for the 2010 Warren Central football team is simply stated: “What have you done today to defend the IHSAA 5A State Championship?”
The Warriors offense must fill the void of a talented backfield that rolled up 5,878 total yards from scrimmage a year ago. Running back Shakir Bell (404 rushes, 3,105 yards, and 39 touchdowns) and quarterback Derek Hart (115-of-230 passing, 1,493 passing yards with 14 touchdowns) will be missed the most. Wide receiver Demetrius Cowherd (21 receptions for 221 yards) has moved on also. In addition, a few holes up front must also be filled with the graduation of Michael Gegner, Brandon Blackburn and Zach Graves.
The “4-3” defense must replace defensive backs James Manuel (115 tackles), Howard Savage (63 tackles), linebackers Brandon Almond (105 tackles), Koree Terrell (131 tackles) and linemen Keith Brown (76 tackles) and Elijah Jones (66 tackles).
The strength of the Warriors rests in the offensive and defensive lines according to Coach Hart.
The Warren “Spread” offense is anchored by one of the top offensive linemen in America in Kiaro Holts, and the defense is led by three-year starter Kris Harley (91 tackles, five sacks). If those two guys weren’t enough to send chills down your spine, the offensive line also welcomes the return of starters Michael Tolliver and Jeremy Rennier. Seniors Corey Drake, Andy Mitchell, Kyle White and Deandre Howard are also expected to see plenty of action this fall in the trenches. Juniors Deyshawn Bond and Antonio Freeman have also caught the eye of the staff upfront. The top prospect at tight end is Darren Bost, a junior.
If the Warriors are going to defend their 5A crown in 2010, one of a handful of prospects must emerge at quarterback. Fighting to win the quarterback spot is Deandre Powell, Clarence Hayes, Mike Upshaw, Ryan Bowersox and Anthony Cooper. Replacing the 5A Player of the Year, Shakir Bell, is a tall task, but good things are expected from running backs Deonte Buckley (67 rushes, 185 yards, two touchdowns), Robert Hollins (8 rushes for 37 yards), and Anthony Davis (32 rushes and 152 yards). The number one prospect for the fullback position is junior Dominique McFarland. On the perimeter the Warriors will look to seniors Anthony Davis (13 receptions, 133 yards) and Shaquille Tensley. Expectations are high for juniors Kevin Davis and Kameron Utter.
The Warriors defense should make plenty of noise with the return of senior linebackers Nick Temple (135 tackles), Dustin Drake (56 tackles) and Damon Williams. Showing a world of promise on the defensive front is senior lineman Sammie Williams, juniors Josh Posley, Jonathan Burt, Sheldon Day, Darnell Smith and DeShawn Luckett. The secondary is very talented with the return of seniors Eric Robinson-Berry and Desmond Cruce, junior Bryan Lattimore and Antwoine Lloyd. The Warriors junior varsity and freshman teams had identical 7-2 records last year.
“This team really likes each other a lot and the chemistry here is outstanding. This group of kids has great intensity and their work ethic is outstanding,” said Hart. “We have some great fighters and some tough kids in these next three classes.”
