2010 ATTICA PREVIEW
POSTED: 7/6/10
By: Donnie Smith

Preview of the 2010 Season
Head Coach Ryan Good heads into his third season at the helm sporting a 13-9 record following a 5-5 campaign last year into a year where it appears anything can happen.
With seven starters returning to the offense and eight to the defense, it would appear that experience is weighing in favor of the Red Ramblers. Toss in the fact that Junior All-State fullback and linebacker Jarrett Smart (144 carries, 982 yards, 11 TDs) returns for his junior season as the team workhorse and go-to guy and there is another positive.
But the loss of quarterback Zach Little (1433 total yards) leaves no experience at the signal caller position. Second leading rusher Seth Rooze is also gone as is wide receiver Mike Mattern and offensive lineman Matt Bachman. How quickly Good can get his replacements in these key positions up to varsity speed will be the key determinant in how far his squad goes.
“Our junior class is a big class this fall,” Good said. “It is a big class and a strong and quick class full of very hardworking and very dedicated athletes. Our senior class is not as big. They are skilled and talented.”
The battle will be at quarterback, where Good has listed three players on the depth chart, only one of whom threw a pass last year in varsity competition. Sophomore Wade Keller completed his only toss for 3 yards last year and he will be battling senior Jacob Mroczkiewicz and freshman Brady Sheridan for the pivotal position on the football field.
Geddy Harp will join Smart in the backfield in Good’s “Wing-T” offense. Harp played in all 10 games last year and ran 48 times for 171 yards. Sophomore Willy Hurst returns at wide receiver after an impressive freshman season in which he caught 17 passes for a 20 yards per pass average and 6 scores.
Of course, the offensive backfield is only as good as the linemen are and Good lists only two players on his O-line depth chart. Senior Seth Cunningham will start for his third year and junior Donovan Struthers are guards who will anchor the line.
On defense, Good again skips over the defensive line on the depth chart. He has listed Smart at linebacker with senior Chase Weaver and Mroczkiewicz as well as Hurst in the defensive backfield.
“Our strength will be the fact that we have lots of participation,” Good said. “Our junior class has great leadership but we will be hampered by the loss of half of our offensive backfield. How successful we are will be determined by how much time and effort the team puts into the offseason.”
