The Charlestown Pirates are seeking to “Finish” in 2010 after going 7-3 overall and 6-0 in the Mid-Southern Conference in 2009.
Both the offensive line and defensive lines are strengths for the Pirates, as is having ten returning senior starters.
Despite this experience, fourthyear Coach Jason Hawkins says his team does not have much depth at quarterback or running back.
Key graduation losses include defensive end Clay Daniel (All-State, All-Area, All-Conference), defensive back Jake Cook (All-Area, All-Conference), running back-defensive back Michael Baines (All-Conference), running back-safety Josh Graham (All-Area, All-Conference), linebacker Eric Kruse (All-Conference) and defensive tackle Lucas Poteet (Honorable Mention All-Conference).
“We are going to be successful if we adjust to the new offensive scheme,” says Hawkins. “(We also need to) limit our turnovers and play defense the way we didlast season. “We have been hit with injuries the last two seasons. We need to stay injuryfree.”
The Pirates’ “Multiple” offense counts senior running back Ethan Brown (50 rushes for 228 yards and two touchdowns) as its top returning rusher, sophomore quarterback Aaron Daniel (13-of-20 for 217 yards and two touchdowns as well as 12 rushes for 63 yards and three TDs) as its top returning passer and senior wide receiver Devan Thorstad (four catches for 108 yards and one TD) as its top returning receiver.
The offensive combination also features sophomore Gage Brafford at quarterback, sophomore Tyler Odle and senior Joey Wilson at running back, junior David Cissell at wide receiver, senior Willie Jenkins at tight end, senior Alex Grimm and sophomore Leighton Brewer at center,
senior Buddy Harper and Matt Hall at guard and sophomore Stephen Johnson and senior Logan McCutchen at tackle.
A “5-2” defense includes Bowen and senior Charles Hunsucker at end, McCutchen and seniors Jon Slaten and Harley Rodriquez at tackle, Hall and senior Jake Dent at linebacker, Cissell, Wilson and seniors Ben McDaniel and D.J. Meyers in the secondary.
On special teams, there’s sophomore punter-kicker Aaron McDaniel with returners Odle and long snapper Brewer.
