Preview of 2010 season
|
After 19 years as head coach for the Crimson Chargers, Phil Teegarden has stepped down and new Head Coach Kevin Downey will take the reins as the Chargers go “All-in for 2010.”
“We are going to be successful if we buy into the new system and give ourselves to the team. If we can create a family atmosphere here at Elkhart Memorial, it will greatly aid in our player development on and off the field”, said Kevin Downey. “Our senior class brings great leadership quality and team chemistry. Our junior class will be a very physical group, especially running back/linebacker Chase Spears (5-11, 185, So.) who is a bull of a running back and can potentially make a great impact on our offense. With our great team chemistry and quickness of our athletes we should be very competitive.”
Last year’s 7-4 team graduated nine of their 2009 impact players including All-State Honorable Mention winners in Zack Corpe (RB), Shane Hendrickson (OL), Tyler Keck (QB/K), Ethan Duley (DL), and Josh Peek (DB). Other key losses include Adam Hirschman (OLB), Chris Septic (OT), Torrey Adams (OT), and Maurice Ellison (MLB).
This years’ Chargers will be lead by top returning performers in quarterback Dustin Mills (6-1, 180, Sr.), guard Cam Hostetler (6-4, 260, Sr.), defensive back Curtis Buford (5-8, 165, Sr.), and defensive back-running back brothers Ben and Alex Brewers (5-8, 160, Sr., Jr.). Mills, the top returning passer, had 59 completions for 704 yards and 5 touchdowns last season and looks to be the pilot of the offense. The top returning rusher is senior Tyran Hansborough (5-5, 140, Sr.) who rushed for 488 yards and a touchdown last season. The top returning receiver is senior Devante Anderson (5-6, 165, Sr.) who had 25 receptions for 343 yards and two touchdowns last season.
Two-year starters include Ben Brewers and Hostetler. One-year starters include Alex Soptich (6-1, 240, Jr.), Bobby Brewers (6-1, 215, Jr.), Hayden Kruger (5-10, 180, Sr.), Urston Smith (6-2, 188, Jr.), Terrance Eubanks (5-5, 160, Sr.), Todd Johnson (5-8, 170, Jr.), Kyle Lipa (5-10, 230, Sr.).
Other offensive contributors are running back Carson Volheim (5-9, 170, Jr.), receiver Todd Johnson (5-8, 170, Jr.), tight end Urston Smith (6-2, 188, Jr.) and linemen Bobby Brewers, Marcus Hawkins (5-11, 200, Jr.), Mike Cripe (6-3, 270, Sr.), Terry Musialik (5-11, 210, Jr.), Brandon Marvel (5-11, 195, Jr.), and DJ Kosloski (6-6, 290, Sr.).
The defense returns just five starters. The depth for each position includes defensive ends Tyler Rody, Bobby Brewers, and Lipa; defensive tackles Dylan Snyder, Cripe, and Kruger; linebackers David Garcia, Buford, Volheim, Spears; and defensive backs Ben and Alex Brewers, Rosenberg, and Todd Johnson.
