2010 FLOYD CENTRAL PREVIEW
POSTED: 6/16/10
By: Donnie Smith

Preview of the 2010 season
The turnaround for the Highlanders continued last season. In just his second season as head coach, Brian Glesing guided Central to its first sectional championship since 1998 and just the program’s second overall. The 9-4 final record was the best finish in six years.
Graduation grabbed some key individuals, however, including quarterback Max Guenther, running back Aaron Sparks, linebackers Matt Lowe and Josh Spalding, tight end Jeffrey Thompson and center Aaron Blair, to name a few. Glesing knows there are holes to fill but is optimistic about keeping his team on a winning scale.
“We return three of five offensive linemen and also have some good young skilled players,’’ noted the Hanover College graduate. “We will be inexperienced on defense and at some positions on offense. We have to continue to work hard and play with lots of emotion.’’
“Our seniors have really improved since their freshman year when they only won two games,’’ continued Glesing. “They have a great work ethic and will provide great leadership. Our juniors have the potential to be a great class. Many of them contributed to our sectional championship last year. Our sophomores won only two games their freshman season. They are few in numbers but there is some individual talent in this group.’’
The “I” offense welcomes back six starters led by junior running back Kyle Bramble who gained just over 600 yards and six touchdowns as a sophomore. He also caught 12 passes for 222 yards and four more scores. Also returning is senior fullback Patrick Uhl, junior wide out Matt Rue,  senior guards Dylan Jenney, Cody Brewer and senior tackle Forest Ridge. Look for junior Garrett  Shanks (5-10, 170) to take over at quarterback. He was 19-of-35 for 236 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in limited action last season. Sophomore Bryce Smith is another quarterback that has impressed Glesing.
Look for juniors Jordan Thompson and Michael Deerr to battle for playing time at tight end while senior Garrett Cambron and junior Andrew Archer hope to fill the gap at center. Senior D.J. Lipps and junior James Barlow hope to see action at tackle.
Just three starters return to the “5-2” defensive scheme led by two year starter T.J. Werner who recorded 54 tackles at defensive end. Rue is again joined in the secondary by senior Brett Zoll as the only players with starting experience. Senior Taylor Lessig and juniors Austin Wirth and Garrett Gibson should fill the holes up front while junior Eric Foster and senior Shane Sneed will be the linebackers. Look for seniors Brock Slavens and Tom Strobel to play big roles in the secondary. Junior Jason Van Buren will again handle the punting and kicking duties.
